Fear of Falling

Fear Of Falling

How do we stop ourselves from falling

From our future or our calling

When we stand close to the edge

On life’s path a narrow ledge

Why do some walk in constant fear

While others see no peril near

Just one stray step or broken ground

The path we tread no longer found

We can plunge so far so fast

To depths below unknown and vast

Unfolding plans that we expect

Make careful steps so we protect

Those people who depend on us

Bound to us by our love and trust

For them we cannot think of pain

When we fall we climb again

But fear of failing eats away

Please let it stop for just a day?

A day not seeing or defending

Against each possible bad ending

Among us some stride purposely

We envy them their surety

To walk the path and they succeed

Not seeing those, the path decreed

Would tumble from their dizzy height

To start again and try to right

The ruins of their once good lives

So quickly lost but still they strive

And never reach those heights again

Too late in life to heave and strain

To reach the zenith of the path

Retrace steps we work and graft

And finish somewhere where we’d been

Our great life plans were never seen

It is so high a price to pay

To live in fear of every day

Beautiful…….great flow and heart in this prose. When you reach into ur soul my friend u find the words and they speak eloquently. Fear always stifles – it’s spreading ur wings n taking chances that give you opportunities u never know u can find that we all miss out on. Fear makes us fall. ((hug))

That was so good I read it twice! I’m usually totally dense about poetry, but that was excellent. GREAT job xx 🙂

This is really good, Col. Very eloquent.

I don’t know that it’s ever *really* too late to reach those heights again. More difficult, perhaps, but not necessarily impossible. And you’re right. It’s fear that holds you back.

Ok, as I said, I like it *very* much. It’s thought provoking, has good imagery, it’s relatable, and it’s not obtuse.
    Now the nit picking:
I think it could be reorganized a bit. To me, this stanza:
“Why do some walk in constant fear
While others see no peril near”

might have worked better closer to:
    “Among us some stride purposely
    We envy them their surety”
    something like that.
And this line: “And finish somewhere where we’d been” while it makes sense, doesn’t flow particularly well for me.

ok, so you asked. I delivered.

    Thanks Kate
I didn’t like that last line either I thought it sounded ugly but I was tired so I left it
    I may rework it though

it is that one thing that’s harder than falling in love

    … supressing the feeling.
